Austen is telling you that society is riddled with silly little women who consider themselves knowledgeable sources of information/facts when their sources are not, actually, reliable at all. She's also degrading women for being so impressionable and incapable of thinking for themselves (Austen was a feminist), and she shows contempt toward women for basing their very existence on the drama's of other people's lives, gossip, and other petty issues.
