Do schools WASTE precious education time sending kids off to 'fundraiser rallies', Book Fairs, and such?

I send my kids off to school to LEARN, not become peddlers or buyers of junk. I am so infuriated with every 'sales pitch'. My girl is SO impressionable with commercials. She gets so excited that she 'could win a prize'. She tossed a fit when we wouldn't let her bring in a quarter to help 'Kids with Cancer'. (she wouldn't get a sticker). Book Fairs are overpriced books and crap. ALL kids go, even the ones without money. they go to 'shop', the the next day 'go to buy'. I am totally willing to send $50 or even $100 a year to 'help' the school just so she could be in class, instead of a half hour learning time listening to a sales pitch from the equivalent of a shady used car salesman. The PTO hear LOVES this stuff. I go to every meeting, and voice my complaints. I am in the minority. Can we get the Dept of Ed to BAN THESE THINGS that take away from educational time? I can't even convince the school board to change policy, to kids could only go if they have permission from parents. your opinions?
